Aston Clinton Overview
A village and parish located 4 miles to the east of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, Aston Clinton grew up around the junction of Akeman Street and the Icknield Way. The parish has an area of 3,809 acres and a population of 3,543, it was settled in Saxon times and listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Estone (Eastern Estate).
The parish church, St Michael and All Angels dates from the 12th century, it had further additions in the 13th and 14th centuries and was fully restored in the 19th century (1867).
One of the village’s claims to fame is that it gave part of it’s name to the Aston Martin car, after test runs and a hillclimbing competition on the nearby Aston Hill (it would otherwise have been called Bamford Martin which doesn’t quite have the same ring!).
A rich patron of the village Sir Anthony de Rothschild donated the Anthony Hall to the village, it survives as one of the village’s listed buildings.

Aston Clinton History – A Brief History of Aston Clinton
Though it may have been settled even before the Roman invasion of Britain, Aston Clinton probably grew as a community where the Roman road, Akeman Street crossed the pre-historic Icknield Way.
With the decline of the Roman Empire (around the 4th century AD), the Saxons took over the settlement, this was confirmed by the discovery of a Saxon cemetary in the area.
When the Normans invaded Britain in the 11th century the village was under the control of Wlwen (possibly a woman) a subject of King Edward the Confessor, Wlwen was most likely the predecessor of Edward of Salisbury, who later held the manor and was Henry I’s standard bearer. The Domesday Book listed the village as Estone (Eastern Estate).
In the 13th century the manor was owned by the Clinton family and the name was changed to Aston de Clinton. The manor passed variously to Sir William de Farendon, the Montacutes, the Countess of Salisbury, the families of Hastings, Barrington, Gerard and Lake.
The medieval parish included the manors of Dundridge, Chivery, Vaches and St Leonards.
During the 19th century Sir Anthony de Rothschild purchased Aston Clinton House, enjoyed horse riding and hunting in the surrounding countryside and donated Anthony Hall to the village.
Archaeological finds which give evidence of Aston Clinton’s rich history include neolithic implements, late Celtic pottery and a Roman amphora.
